CHAPTER THREE

Sam called my landline that night just after dinner to tell me that he had to go out of town unexpectedly. When I answered I did not recognize his voice. It’s a funny thing. Some people are abysmal at face recognition after meeting someone for the first time. Since I hadn’t seen his face clearly that wasn’t the issue. I am, however, pathetic when it comes to voice recognition. I have to have heard a person’s voice several times before I recognize any intonations of pattern. Not a good trait for someone trying to run a business. I was, in fact, expecting a call from a client and so I was flustered when he identified himself. It also didn’t help that I own a first generation iPhone, and after six years, the sound quality was beginning to suffer. I was long overdue for an upgrade.

“I’m so sorry, Danica,” he said. “I know you want your dog returned and Cecily’s anxious to see Ming Ming, but I have to leave now. The snow’s starting again and I must catch my flight before it gets cancelled.”

I wanted to say ‘wasn’t it too dangerous to fly?’ but it was none of my concern, and so I said nothing. I missed Tang very much, although Ming Ming was a fine substitute.

“If you’re worried about Tang, I can find someone to bring him to you. Or if you don’t mind…you can drive over here.” His voice faded as he turned to consult his daughter. “Cecily wants to text you a picture of her with Tang from her phone, so that you can see he’s happy and safe.”

I gave him the number to my cellphone, which he repeated to Cecily. I received the text within seconds on my iPhone and smiled. The little girl was lovely with bronze curls holding fuzzy little Tang with his pink tongue lolling out. “Thanks for that, Sam,” I said into the landline. “And of course, I’ll drive over to pick up Tang. Don’t send anyone.” I paused for an eye blink. “Here’s a picture of Ming Ming.” I snapped the shot and immediately sent it to Cecily’s cellphone. The pint-sized pooch was frowning indignantly as usual.

“Great,” Sam said. “Now, I’ve really got to go. My limousine is here. You have the address?”

“Yes, I’ll be over as soon as I can detach Ming Ming from her nest on the sofa, and place her into her carrier.”

“Sally will open the door for you. She’s Cecily’s nanny. Sorry to have to miss you. But business calls.”

“Oh believe me, I understand. When will you be back?” It dawned on me as the words came tumbling out of my mouth that his return date was none of my business. Once I had my dog back that would be the end of the story, and I would likely never hear from him again.

“In a couple of days,” he said, “providing there are no more flight cancellations.” He paused for a moment. “I have an idea. You’ve been so kind about taking care of our dog and I know she’s not easy.
